Description
The Wieliczka salt mine is one of the most amazing monuments in Polish cultural history listed on the first UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage List. Visitors can walk through a 3.5 kilometers long tourist route located at a depth between 64m and 135m to discover underground chapels and lakes. Original mining tunnels, devices, and tools remind the stories of the miners’ daily struggles through centuries.
It takes around 30 minutes to drive from the center of Krakow to Wieliczka. A standard guided tour through the salt mine lasts 2-3 hours. Also bear in mind that there are very long corridors and 800 stairs of which 350 have to be descended in the very beginning to reach the first level of the mine at the depth of 64 meters underground.
Know before you go:
- You will be required to climb 800 steps at the salt mine, including 350 steps to descend to the 1st level.
- Temperatures in Wieliczka Salt Mine are around 59ºF (15ºC), and narrow paths may seem claustrophobic.
- You need to purchase a permit to take photographs in the mine.
